When a silent retreat is held live-online, it offers some particular opportunities and challenges. Please read the guidance below carefully and reach out to us via the email addresses above if you have questions.
- To the fullest extent possible, find a quiet, comfortable space from which to participate in the retreat. This may be just one room if you are living with others, or, if you live alone, your entire home may act as your retreat center.
- Give thought to your practice props, such as meditation chair, bench or cushion, yoga mat, shawl and whatever else you may wish to have handy, in advance. Create a welcoming, supportive set-up for yourself.
- Refraining from communications as best as you can will support the gentle collecting of attention that is a key aspect of retreat practice. If you live with others, a softness around the silence may be needed. If this is the case for you, the guideline, "is this a need or a preference?" may be helpful to consider with speech during the retreat.
- Simplicity is another element of retreat that supports deepening mindfulness. Do what you can to simplify your activities during the retreat days. Again here, the "need or preference?" guideline may help. Please take good care of your needs and explore letting go of preferences. One very helpful step you can take in advance is to clear your calendar during the retreat.
- Have a regular spot for walking meditation. If your setting is conducive, being outdoors in nature can be supportive.
- As best you can, stay with the simplicity of the basics of human experience, like sitting, walking, breathing and eating.
- Bring kindness and patience to yourself throughout the days of retreat. The quiet and simplicity of the retreat form is intended to help you deepen your practice, and being gentle and supportive of yourself is encouraged.
- Keep an auto-responder on your email accounts and use your computer just for connecting with the retreat.
- Turn off all devices (cell phones, smart watches, etc.) that you do not need during the retreat and shut down any programs and/or notifications that might distract you while we are online together.
- Set a gentle but firm intention to include all aspects of your life in your retreat. Bring awareness of all five physical senses, as well as thoughts and emotions, to eating, waking up in the morning, falling asleep at night, doing routine tasks, walking around your home, showering, and so on.
